Sometimes, we just want hugs. As great as it may be to show off your shelves of vinyl Star Wars figures, what happens when the guests and admirers leave? When you’re all alone? Plastic figures can’t cuddle very well…and that’s where plush comes in. Ah, plush toys. There’s nothing like being able to geek out over an item that you can simultaneously collect and snuggle up to. They’re also a fabulous way to start little geeks off on the right path in life-start ‘em young, start ‘em geeky, is the philosophy we like to take.
1. GIANT Microbes
Know someone with an ulcer? Athletes foot? E. coli? Then as long as they have a somewhat geeky sense of humor, there’s no better ‘get well soon’ gift than a GIANT Microbe. These plush microbes closely resemble their real life counterparts, only much, much larger, and much, much, cuddlier. There’s just about every germ, disease, bacteria, or virus available for you to pick up. Even if you know someone with something as obscure these days as the Black Death-there’s a Giant Microbe for that.
“Hey Paul, I heard you came down with Giardia the other day”
“Yeah, it’s quite unfortunate.”
“Well here, I have a little something for you…” *pulls out microbe, plays psycho theme song*
Laughter is the best medicine, right?
2. Fruit Ninja
Humans are such strange, strange creatures. Among many other things, it is extraordinarily exemplified in our modern day smartphone apps. Apps such as Fruit Ninja, where upon players can get utter satisfaction and entertainment out of slicing fruit on a screen for hours.
But then of course we take it one step farther, and turn that fruit into a plush toy. Yes, plush versions of the fruit that star in Fruit Ninja are available- and they come with all the squishing, squashing, slicing sound effects you could hope for. There’s also a plush version of the bomb, complete with realistic bomb sounds. We just don’t suggest you take that one on an airplane, no matter how much you might love it. Some people just don’t understand us geeks.
3. Adventure Time
It’s time… time to bring Adventure Time to shelves, bedrooms, and offices across the world in the form of squishy, delectable plush toys! What exactly do I mean by delectable? I don’t know, but it seems fitting. . Adventure Time just begged to be turned into plush, Finn’s flowing golden locks all tucked up under his cap, a half unicorn, half rainbow beastie…how can you resist? Lady Rainicorn, Princess Lumpy, Jake, Finn…these are some of the coolest plush for us geeks there is, and there’s such lovely selection of characters out, even the most selective fan will be pleased.
4. Chewy Plush Toys
Other than Ewoks, Chewbacca is possibly one of the most well-known characters that us geeks would give up a whole hour of LARPing for, just to give him a hug. Now, we’re in luck, and we don’t even have to sacrifice LARP time. With this giant, astronomically snuggly, plush figure, Chewbacca is available for all his fans to hug, in our galaxy and beyond. Just a note for serious Star Wars geeks out there- I have an extremely brachiocephalic (that is, smoosh faced) dog who happens to have a high gum line. This results in little nubbins for teeth, and his lips often get stuck in such a way the he seriously resembles an Ewok. I’ll be charging $1.50 for 5 minutes of cosplay with him and an Ewok hug.
Biochemies are simultaneously adorable and educational. ‘What are these mythical things, you wonder, that can be educational and cute? Aside from your 6th grade science teacher that you had a crush on; you probably didn’t know such a thing existed! Well they do. Biochemies are little plush versions of DNA molecules, created by a student who studies biology and chemistry at the University of San Diego. They resemble actual DNA molecules in more than just their structure. They have little magnets embedded in them so that they attach at the same points as their real life counterparts would. They’re also quite soft. And have supremely sweet faces.
6. Wee Ninja Plush Toys
Wee Ninja’s are stealthy assassins, trained in mighty yet graceful ways. Cloaked in darkness, they stalk the night, hunting down their unwary enemies. Sometimes, though, sneakier means are needed to take down their foe…means such as… sneak attack snuggling, or tickle torture. Sometimes their fights don’t require extreme strength, but rather extremely smothering cuddles.
For any ninja fans out there who have wanted to give a ninja a hug, here’s your chance. But beware, young grasshopper, just because they are wee, does not make then any less powerful then ninjas who are not. They just happen to be available at a large retailer near you.
7. Particle Zoo Subatomic Particle Softies
Are you really into the field of particle physics? No? It’s ok, you can be honest. It won’t make you any less of a geek to admit to that. Just like any other group of people, geeks have fields that they know a lot about, and not so much about. Some of us know a lot about Magic Cards, others, comics. If you happen to know a lot about particle physics, then that’s awesome and you should most definitely be looking into Particle Zoo. If you don’t, these little plush are a good way to start expanding your geekdom. The Particle Zoo is essentially a collection of handmade novelty plush toys that that resemble particles such as protons, electrons, and photons-to name a very small amount of them. The plush are all made by one person, and become surprisingly addicting to collect and learn about once you’re exposed to them.
8. I Heart Guts
These plush toys, which hover at the intersection of gross and adorable, are sure to put any get well soon card to serious shame. Have someone who’s having heart troubles (physical or otherwise?) Get them a clean, cuddly version of the hardest working muscle in the body to cheer them up! Or, if you’re like me, you’ll really just want to collect all the plush versions of our organs. They’d make a perfect gift for any geeky docs in your life too. Well, any geek, really.
9. Angry Birds Space
Fans of Angry Birds (aka half the population of the world) unite! Angry Birds have left Earth and are onto bigger and better missions out in space. Pretend to join in on their adventure with these fabulous little plush models of the Angry Birds Space game. Or, if you don’t feel like zooming around your room with them alone and making Angry Birds sound effects, you could use them to decorate your office with-and I have to admit they’d make pretty sweet office decorations.
10. Yoda Plush Backpack
Who better to entrust your books with then Yoda? I am thinking…and I can’t come up with anyone. With this lovely plush backpack, you can simultaneously have the honor of giving the Jedi Master a piggyback ride and letting him carry your school and/or geek supplies, whatever they may be. Oh, and don’t forget the fact that the pocket is deep enough to stick a lightsaber hilt in.
If you’re wondering where to get these geeky plush toys, you should check out eBay or ThinkGeek!
