Why The 3DS Mario Kart Steering Wheel Is A Terrible Idea

Hori has developed a steering wheel for the 3DS that costs a mere $16.  This post is here to save you from the VERY OBVIOUS pitfalls of any steering wheel for the Nintendo 3DS.  Hori’s add-on is going to launch with the new Super Mario Kart games, in hopes that people will buy both together.  Allow me to let you in on something secret: they will.  And when they do, they will be disappointed.  Not only will the 3DS Mario Kart steering wheel make you look like a fool, your head will probably be aching like crazy at the end of a playing session.

We all know that for the 3DS to look 3D, it needs to be held in a certain position relative to your eyes.  Correct?  We also know that, in the intenseness that is Mario Kart, we’re going to be taking some crazy turns.  When we put both of these facts together, we understand that we’ll be turning our heads with the controller like a bunch of fools.  But, it’s inevitable that your turning muscles are faster than your neck muscles, which means that you won’t always get to see the 3D.  This may sound disappointing, and it is.  But it also means headaches and bad news.

I wrote a prior post saying that the 3DS does not give headaches to very many people.  I also said that you will not get headaches if you follow Nintendo’s guidelines.  (Turn off the 3D for ten minutes every so long, etc.)  Moving your head around like a maniac and not looking at the device at the correct angle are two things that Nintendo did not mention on their “list of things you should do with a 3DS.”  Of course, you could turn off the 3D, but then you could just go play your DS and save yourself $170.  Also, you’ll still be following the console with your face, so your social life is just unsalvageable.
