Gamescom Highlights: Because You Weren’t There
Over the past week, Gamescom took place in Germany. Now although this event doesn’t nearly reach the level of gaming press as E3, it still has been home to some great announcements and this year was no different. Here are a few noteworthy highlights from the event.
PS3 Price Cut
It was at Gamescom when Sony announced their new slimmer version of the PS3 as well as the reduced price point. So it only makes sense that at Gamescom this year is where they announce a price cut. The PS3 now costs $249.99, and has already had an impact on sales.
Motion Control Still Rules
Both Sony and Microsoft kept showing support for the Move and Kinect with promises of more games and new ways of using the motion control technology. Microsoft showed off Star Wars Kinect as well as Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor, a new mech
game for the Kinect.
New PSP
This was a pretty surprising announcement from Sony. Having already announced the Playstation Vita, no one really expected them to announce another PSP. It will be compatible with the entire PSP library but will not have Wi-fi. It will also only be released in Europe for the low price of 99 Euros. Like I said this announcement seemed out of place, but the Vita still got plenty of attention. New social features were announced as well as some great games shown off, including Vita versions of Resistance, Uncharted, and LittleBigPlanet.
New Games Announced at Gamescom
The biggest game announced at the event was Borderlands 2, the sequel to the best new IP of 2009. Also announced were Infamous: Festival of Blood, the vampire spin off of the popular series and Joe Danger: The Movie, a sequel to the downloadable hit title.
And finally we have the trailers, there were plenty of them for both new games and ones we already knew existed. Here are some of the best ones.
