Augmented Reality Cinema, a new app coming soon to your iPhone, allows the user to stroll the streets of their city and view various, popular scenes from their favorite movies shot in their exact location. While still in a concepting and development stage, the video shown at the bottom of this post showcases how the app will work.

 

 

As a movie lover myself, this app seems like a great idea to let me, along with every other film buff, rewatch my favorite clips. Being from Minneapolis, I can imagine walking around playing Tiny Wings on my iPhone and being interrupted to watch Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad trouncing around in Jingle All The Way.  Or, imagine walking to work in New York and watching the city get destroyed by an immense wave in The Day After Tomorrow or by the monster in Cloverfield. This app could really give your day some surprises.

What is uncertain as of now is how new scenes can be added and tagged to a location. Hopefully the app is open to user additions and is kept free from spam-like, viewer-made, home movies. Also uncertain is how copyrights will play into the future of this app. My guess is that the major film studios will probably be up in arms about it, but let’s hope that they can see it as free promotion for their movies and the awesome scenes in the app will trigger income. I can already predict the studios using it to promote new movies in a gorilla-marketing type of way to target the app users. For example, a scene Transformers: Dark of the Moon takes place in Chicago and features major robot destruction, so those iPhone users in the city could be greeted with exclusive preview content as a way to encourage them to see the film.

I sure am excited to get my hands on this app and see what is made possible. What do you guys think?
