PaPeRo is a 15-inch high smart robot that helps you out.  The PaPeRo robot can navigate typical homes, connect to the internet, and read e-mails!  It has a face-recognition system that allows it to detect faces and look at them!  PaPeRo looks for features it has seen before, and if it recognizes you, its eyes light up!  PaPeRo also has sound and light sensors.

 

The makers of PaPeRo, NEC, describe its facial recognition capabilities:

 

Recognize faces (Face recognition)

• Face detection:
  It finds people from the images on its CCD camera by means of image recognition technology.
• Facial identification:
  It can discriminate among and memorize the faces of up to 30 people.
• Face tracking:
  By tracking a face that it has found, it interacts while always looking at the face.
• Condition detection feedback:
  When it cannot see a face well or if the distance or location is not satisfactory, it will adjust the distance on its own or tell the person, “It’s too dark.”
